I often work with groups of athletes, teams and students on enhancing their mental skills. Group sessions are interactive, fun, empowering and relaxing all at the same time. Whether it’s done for gaining some extra confidence before a big competition, calming the overthinking mind, turning anxiety into excitement, becoming more focused and/or getting an edge over their competition, inner mind work successfully puts the power into the student and student athletes hands. I love when coaches get excited about including mental work into their programs. It not only helps the athletes become more confident but it helps the coach too. Those who include mental work have more confident, happier, focused, healthier and more successful athletes, teams, and records for several reasons:
1. Enhanced self-belief: Inner mind work, such as visualization, positive affirmations, deep guided inner mind recordings and goal setting, helps athletes develop a strong sense of self-belief. By visualizing success and reinforcing positive thoughts, athletes become more confident in their abilities, which translates into improved performance on the field.
2. Improved focus and concentration: Inner mind work techniques teach athletes how to quiet their minds and stay focused on the present moment. This inlcudes deep breathing techniques and actionable tools to use to refocus during high pressure situations and adversity. These techniques allow them to block out distractions and perform at their best, leading to better results and higher success rates.
3. Effective stress management: Inner mind work equips athletes with tools to manage stress and anxiety effectively. By learning relaxation techniques, athletes can reduce performance-related pressure and perform more consistently under challenging circumstances.
4. Enhanced motivation and drive: Inner mind work helps athletes tap into their inner motivations and set meaningful goals. By aligning their actions with their values and desires, athletes become more driven and dedicated to achieving success, leading to improved performance and higher levels of satisfaction.
5. Improved resilience and mental toughness: Inner mind work helps athletes develop mental toughness and resilience, enabling them to bounce back from setbacks and maintain a positive mindset. This resilience allows athletes to stay focused and motivated even in the face of adversity, leading to improved performance and better overall records.
6. Enhanced team dynamics: Inner mind work not only benefits individual athletes but also improves team dynamics. By fostering a positive and supportive team culture, athletes are more likely to work together, communicate effectively, and support each other's growth. This cohesive team environment contributes to happier athletes and more successful team performances.
Included in my program is a nightly 20-25 minute recording, 4 minute pregame affirmation, an inspirational talk with question/answer session about the importance of taking care of their minds and bodies (sleep, nutrition, avoiding social pressure, etc.) and teaching deep breathing techniques. It’s an uplifting, positive session that shows athletes and young adults they have the power to change their attitude, their outcome and their reactions as well as handle any adversity throw at them.
Coaches who incorporate inner mind work in their programs provide athletes with the tools and techniques necessary to develop a strong mental game. This, in turn, leads to increased confidence, happiness, camaraderie and success both individually and as a team.
